Sturdy Health and its 110-year-old community hospital, Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, have been awarded the 2024 Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM) Vision Award for their history of providing high-quality health care and economic benefit to the people of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Aimee Brewer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sturdy Health, will accept the award before hundreds of business leaders at the AIM Annual Meeting in Cambridge on May 10.

The AIM Vision Award recognizes companies, organizations and individuals who have made unique contributions to the cause of economic opportunity in Massachusetts. The award reflects AIM’s mission to stand for jobs, economic prosperity, innovation and a government that acknowledges that the private sector has the unique responsibility to create the “common wealth” for the people of Massachusetts.

“At a time when the health-care system in Massachusetts and elsewhere is under enormous pressure, Sturdy Memorial Hospital and Sturdy Health have lived up to their name by being an unshakable part of the community while caring for friends, family members and neighbors close to home,” said Brooke Thomson, President and CEO of AIM.

Sturdy Health is an independent, community-driven health system that offers hospital-based care, emergency and urgent care, primary care, and specialty care at 26 locations throughout the region. The organization employs more than 2,000 physicians, clinicians and team members representing salaries and benefits of $216 million. The company invests more than $16 million in care for people who have no health insurance.

Sturdy Memorial Hospital admits some 7,700 patients annually while treating more than 51,000 people in its emergency room and another 315,000 within its medical offices. It offers 128-beds and a wide range of inpatient services, including an all-suite labor and delivery unit.

The hospital in November broke ground for Sturdy Health Cancer & Specialty Care Medical Office Building, a $50 million addition that will house services for cardiology, gastrointestinal, general surgery, oncology, pain management and urology. The center will also unite the infusion center currently located in Sturdy Memorial Hospital to offer a more comprehensive care experience for oncology patients.

Sturdy Memorial opened its doors in 1913 as a 15-bed hospital in the former mansion of gold-plate maker James Sturdy and his wife, Ada. In April of that year, tours organized by the Attleborough Hospital Association allowed visitors to see how the old Sturdy homestead had been converted to patient quarters and how a new and modern – for pre-World War I times – operating room had been added. The Attleboro Sun pronounced that it compared “favorably with any similar institution in New England.”
