The Trump Administration confirmed today that tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China will take effect tomorrow. All three countries are major trading partners for Massachusetts.
Products from Mexico and Canada will be subject to 25 percent tariffs and those from China will be hit by a 10 percent tariff. Those countries account for more than a third of the goods and services that are imported to, or bought from, the United States. All three governments have promised to answer Mr. Trump’s levies with tariffs of their own on U.S. exports.
Many AIM members conduct trade with Canada, Mexico and China.
Massachusetts’ annual trade with Canada includes goods and services, and in 2023, the total was $17.1 billion. This includes agricultural trade, exports of equipment and machinery, and services like business services and financial services. Annual trade between Massachusetts and Mexico tops $8 billion annually.
AIM continues to work with federal policymakers and international representatives to assess the impact of the new tariffs.
